EXCERPTS FROM NEWSPAPER ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN RUSSIAN DAILY NOVOYE RUSSKOYE SLOVO OF JANUARY 23, 1990 ABOUT VLADIMIR ALENIKOVS FILM THE DRAYMAN AND YHE KING

LAUGHTER AND TEARS: THE DRAYMAN AND THE KING

This film appears to be the first in the row about the Jews in the Soviet cinema; it is the first version of the famous play by Babel, The Sunset, which was proclaimed illegal in the USSR for more than 60 years. And, besides, this is the first dramatic musical film produced in the Soviet Union. Vladimir, Alenikov, the director of this film, is not only a high-rank professional, but he also manages to draw the spectators into the charming world of his movie and makes the audiences forget that this is a film about Jews only they watch all the event as if it were real life

The ending of the film is done extremely professionally The director of the film managed to combine that which is usually not associated, the poetry and the circus tricks, the humor and the tragedy

All this makes us compare The Drayman and the King with the famous Fellini film, And the Ship Moves On.

It is very difficult to determine the exact genre of this film, for this film is not only unique to the Soviet cinema, but also to the world cinema

I do not know if the director of the movie, Vladimir Alenikov, could foresee that his film, which is a cultural event and local story of human feeling of love and envy, would become a social event. Because for the first time in 70 years, a story of Jewish family was shown on the screen.
